Preparation is Key

Preparation is Key

Proper preparation is essential for a perfect finish and ensures our rules adhere correctly for the entire run.

  • Clean the Impression Cylinder: Before you begin, thoroughly clean the impression cylinder to remove any oil or grease. Ensure the surface is completely dry before applying the rule.

  • Protect Your Blanket: While our rules are designed to be blanket-friendly, many printers prefer to use an old blanket or a protection sheet. When reusing a blanket, always check that the previous job's position won't interfere with the current layout.

Preparation is Key

  • Position with Precision: Clearly place guidelines on your plates. Before applying the rule, confirm you can position it in precise accordance with the artwork and that you have the correct type and size of Thompson-Boyd rule for the job.

Method A: Direct-to-Cylinder Application

Method A: Direct-to-Cylinder Application

This method transfers the plate image directly to the impression cylinder to serve as your placement guide.

1.Transfer the Image: Ink up the press and run one cycle without paper. This will transfer a clear image of your guidelines onto the impression cylinder.

3. Cut & Place the Rule: Measure and cut the rule to the required length. Remove the paper backing to expose the adhesive.

2. Adhere the Rule: Carefully align the rule with the guidelines on the cylinder and press down firmly.

4. Secure and Set Up: Overlay the rule with the provided clear tape. As you prepare for the run, check that all press parts clear the rule. Run a few make-ready sheets to check placement and adjust pressure as needed.

Method B: Carrier Sheet Application

Method B: Carrier Sheet Application

This method secures the rule to a carrier sheet, which is then adhered to the impression cylinder—ideal for complex or recurring jobs.

  1. Prepare the Sheet: With a carrier sheet on a flat surface, apply the rule along your guidelines. Overlay the rule with the clear tape.

2. Apply Adhesive: Apply a light coat of spray adhesive to the area of the impression cylinder where the carrier sheet will be positioned.

3. Feed the Sheet: Place the carrier sheet onto the feeder table, aligning it with the head stop and side guide. Manually turn the press forward and feed the sheet in, allowing only the unit being used to go on impression.

4.Secure the Sheet: The carrier sheet will adhere to the cylinder. Stop the press when the sheet is halfway through and cut off the gripper bite. Secure the leading edge of the carrier sheet with additional tape.

 5. Final Adjustments: Back off the pressure and adjust as desired for the job. After the run, the carrier sheet can be carefully removed and stored for future use.
