Before You Begin

 For a perfect perforation, always start                      with a solid foundation.

  • Positioning is Key: Ensure the perforating rule is positioned on the plate in precise accordance with the artwork.
  • The Right Tool for the Job: Double-check that you have the correct type and size of Thompson-Boyd rule to match the paper stock and desired finish.

  • Potential Solutions:
  • Adjust or replace the press grippers.
  • Lay a piece of clear tape over the perforating rule.
  • Apply a light silicone spray directly to the rule's teeth.

  • Potential Solutions:
  • Gradually increase the impression pressure.
  • For tougher or thicker stock, switch to a Thompson-Boyd "High" series rule designed for a stronger bite.

  • Potential Solutions:

Reduce the impression pressure.

For more delicate stock, change to a Thompson-Boyd "Low" series rule.

Overlay the rule with a piece of clear film tape to soften the impression.

  • Potential Solutions:
  • Confirm you are using a hard, non-compressible blanket (3- to 4-ply is ideal).
  • Check and systematically increase the impression pressure.
  • If possible, try reversing the blanket or using the backside.
  • Check if your press has spring-loaded cylinders, as some are designed to release pressure as a safety precaution, which may prevent a full perforation.

  • Immediately reduce the impression pressure.
  • Make sure you are using the correct rule height for the thickness of the paper stock.

  •  Potential Solutions:
  • Reduce the impression pressure.
  • On high-speed web presses that generate significant heat, try overlaying the perf with ½” to ¾” masking tape to help secure it.

  • Back off the impression pressure.
  • Try using a center-mounted rule to distribute pressure evenly on both sides of the blade.
