Product-to-Paper Guide

Choosing the right rule is critical for a flawless finish. This guide provides the basic criteria for selecting the ideal Thompson-Boyd perforating or scoring rule for your specific job.

Please note that multiple factors can affect the perfect rule choice, including the specific brand of paper, press type, and application techniques. When in doubt, our expert technical team is here to help.

Understanding TPI (Teeth Per Inch) & Tear Resistance

Special scoring rules are available from .0125" to .029".

  • Lower heights work well on lightweight stocks.

  • Higher heights are effective for the toughest scoring jobs, including:
    • Coated paper above 12-point
    • Heavier enamel or cast-coated stock
    • Heavy cover stocks

Understanding TPI (Teeth Per Inch) & Tear Resistance

The TPI of a perforating rule determines how easily the final product will tear. The behavior changes between standard and micro-perforations.

Standard Perforation (3 - 16 TPI)

With standard perf, a higher TPI count results in a stronger, harder-to-tear perforation.

  • 12-16 TPI: Hard to tear. Often needs to be folded first. Ideal for mailers or documents that require durability.

  • 8 TPI: Medium tear. A good general-purpose option.

  • 6 TPI & Lower: Easy to tear. Stocks above 8 pt. will separate with very little effort. Ideal for tickets and coupons.

Micro-Perforation (30 - 50 TPI)

Understanding TPI (Teeth Per Inch) & Tear Resistance

Micro-Perforation (30 - 50 TPI)

With micro-perf, the rule is reversed: a higher TPI count creates a finer, easier-to-tear perforation that leaves a cleaner edge.
